Lower Elementary North Assistant Teacher

Katie Hogan

Katie Hogan began teaching at Khalsa Montessori as a substitute throughout the spring of 2011.   She joined the Lower Elementary North classroom during the final weeks of the school year transitioning into her new role as a second LEN assistant teacher.  Katie was raised in Bellevue, Washington, and transplanted to the Phoenix area with her family in 2000. She grew up speaking English at home and Spanish through an immersion program offered at the local public school in WA. In the summer of 1996, she was offered an opportunity to volunteer in a Spanish-speaking migrant daycare center in Eastern Washington. She volunteered two additional summers, 1997 and 1998, and her passion for learning by teaching has grown from there. She has worked with kindergarten and school age children for Kindercare Learning Centers, as well as completed educational intern hours through the Deer Valley School District, in North Phoenix.

She is pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a specialty in English Language Learning and expects to graduate in December 2013. Having experienced the very different learning environments between public education, corporate childcare and Khalsa, she feels strongly about the benefit of the Montessori method. Her two favorite quotes are “I like to smile, smiling’s my favorite!” Elf, and "Teaching… is not a matter of being simpler but of being more profound, of not only starting from scratch but also determining where scratch is," Mina Shaughnessy. Her hobbies include: helping others, reading, writing, baking, learning, biking, singing, dancing, playing with her dog, spending time with friends and family, laughing and smiling.
