Elementary
The KMS offers multi-aged classrooms with two three-year elementary cycles and one two-year middle school cycle. Our lower elementary program is equivalent to 1st through 3rd grades and our upper elementary program to 4th through 6th grades. The KMS kindergarten program is part of our three-year (ages 3 to 6) primary classrooms and is offered at our primary campus. An effective Montessori experience depends on the increased possibilities for self-paced learning in a classroom with a range of ages and stages of development. The KMS believes that students within these programs should be placed individually according to ability and readiness rather than chronological age. Exact numbers of students at each grade level may vary but the school strives for a balance of ages in each classroom. The capacity of each classroom is from 14-30 students, with one head teacher and one or two assistant teachers. Classes and/or activities in Spanish, yoga, art and physical education are included in the weekly curriculum. Extracurricular classes vary each year but normally include art classes, soccer and baseball through the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, dance, creative drama, karate, and summer swim lessons. All of these programs are taught by outside professional who are experts in their fields, while also being excellent teachers of young children. Field trips are an integral part of our Montessori curriculum. Monthly field trips include visits to anthropological sights, science and activity museums, animal parks and area farms, local businesses, and desert parks. Yearly class trips have included a wide variety of educational and natural sites in Arizona and the Southwest. Khalsa's location allows for regular visits to the Phoenix Public Library, Monterey Park, and downtown museums and cultural events. Biannual activity fees cover the costs of field trips as well as art supply and special program fees. Activity fees and extra-curricular fees are applicable for an Arizona State income tax credit of up to $400 per year. Before & After School Care and Vacation ProgramsChildcare is available to all enrolled children before and after regular classroom hours and during most vacation, in-service and conference days. Care from 7:30-8:30a.m. is available through the Khalsa School. After school and vacation program care is available through a contracted service and is operated on site. Information on the after school program is available in the school office. |
